Making Changes
Yesterday I made a permanent change to my physical being.
One of the allowances during my 12 months of more is to spend money on experiences. When I created that rule I considered events like nice dinners, concerts, vacations, activities to fall into that category.
Another point of this whole year is to consume less or at least be more conscious of myself as a consumer.
I’ve been wearing glasses and contact lenses since I was in the fourth grade. In 2013, I switched to daily lenses because they were more convenient. They also produce more waste, daily.
I know it may seem silly to you when I say that, but just take a second to think about it. Even on the days when I wear my glasses, I’m throwing away at least one disposable wipe I use to clean them. For the last 2,555 days of my life I have been throwing out some form of garbage pertaining to my eyes - every single day!
Last month I made the decision that I would be investing in Lasik eye surgery to correct my vision. It’s something I’ve considered on and off for years, but never wanted to spend the “extra” money on. At first, I wasn’t sure that I was “allowed” to have this sort of procedure during my 12 months because it’s not something I need and I would be paying for it out of pocket. However, after taking into consideration the fact that I will produce less waste daily AND be able to see clearly 24/7 (which I will argue enhances everyday experiences), I have decided it’s not only allowed but a good expense.
What do you guys think of my decision? In your opinion, am I breaking the rules here?
